![]() I've personally run Windows machines for a long time with no infection, that doesn't mean I'm going to tell people they shouldn't use AV. I completely agree that Macs are much less likely to be compromised, that's not what I'm saying. Regardless, a professional would respect the industry's best practices and operate in a responsible manner, and advocate for others to do the same. These are computers, and if you knew anything, you would know there's not been a single creation of man's that's flawless. Just because you've never banged your thumb with a hammer doesn't mean they'll always hit the head. Where you get these "antimalarial" ideas is beyond me. That's OK, you can have your opinion, I can have mine. If a $3500 Mac Pro is appreciably slowed by AV then you spent too much. These same users are too cheap to spend $30 to protect it against viruses, often with the rationale that they can't slow down their system with antivirus. I am continually amazed by Apple geniuses who are interested enough in a computer that "just works" to pay $3500 for the thing. It has taken a "retrofit" approach to trying to make a fundamentally insecure platform secure and this has obvious and inherent flaws, as demonstrated by the damage done every day to Windows systems. Windows is not just a virus magnet because is has been popular. I am continually amazed at the inability of Windows based admins to understand that OS X is designed to be secure and has antimalarial protection built in. Works wonderfully at detecting viruses in spam email much better than anything I have installed on my Windows machines. I run Sophos free edition on my Mac at home. How can you be sure that none of these have been exploited? I have several servers which have no access to the Internet, but we still run AV protection to ensure that no vulnerabilities are exploited and no file uploaded to them is infected. If you do not run AV or malware protection, how can you be sure you do not have any infections? All software and OS's are full of vulnerabilities. I have not ran virus protection on my windows or mac's in about 8 years, and never got a virus, so the best protection is always "know what your clicking on" I do not think it will ever be as bad as windows, but it could be. It was great when it was only like 5% of the market share, but since its grown so fast, and still growing, people will start writing more and more virus's. As mac's get more and more of the market share, there will start being more and more virus's written for it.
